Proposal to set up Islamic sta

ISFAHAN, May 15 (MNA) -- The first conference of police chiefs of Islamic states kicked off on Monday in Isfahan.

The governor general of Isfahan Province read out President Mahmud Ahmadinejad’s message at the opening ceremony, which was also attended by Interior Minister Mostafa Purmohammadi, Iranian National Police Chief General Esmaeil Ahmadimoqaddam, other police officials, and Isfahan Province officials.

In his message, Ahmadinejad described the meeting as the best opportunity to boost cooperation between those responsible for maintaining law and order in Islamic countries.

“What distinguishes the police of Islamic states is their commitment to Islamic ethics,” part of the letter read.

The message added that the police should be the manifestation of law and respect for the rights and dignity of the people while encouraging everyone to be law-abiding citizens.

In an address to the conference, Purmohammadi said that the Islamic community should create a unified security system and promote multilateral police cooperation.

He also called for the establishment of an organization of Islamic states’ police that would be called Ispol, an expansive computer network, and rapid reaction forces in Islamic countries as well as tighter control of common borders.

The gathering aims to further familiarize police chiefs with the crimes and social maladies in Islamic countries and ways to combat them, evaluate the performance of police forces in observing human rights and civil rights, and promote interaction among Islamic countries’ police forces.
