Editorial: Even good cops need
Many will hope that the long-awaited report of the commission of inquiry into police conduct will stop any recurrence of the gross sexual behaviour that has come to light in recent years. The recommendations of the commissioner, Dame Margaret Bazley, give reason to hope. She wants the code of conduct issued to sworn police officers to include clear guidelines on appropriate sexual behaviour and relationships.

Woman gets probation in corrup

Janerra Carson-Slaughter, who had been the secretary to former East St. Louis Police Chief Ronald Matthews, was sentenced Monday to two years of probation for her role in the corruption case that sent her boss to prison.

Carson-Slaughter, of Fairview Heights, pleaded guilty in March 2005 in U.S. District Court at East St. Louis of conspiracy to obstruct justice.

The charges said she took part of the money paid to Matthews by Dave Qattoum, an auxiliary police officer and businessman, to retrieve a gun that regular officers had confiscated from him. The gun played a potential role in an immigration investigation of Qattoum, a Palestinian immigrant.

Matthews was convicted of obstruction of justice and perjury, and is serving a 33-month prison term. Qattoum is serving a 21-month sentence for obstructing justice.

Scott Rosenblum, the attorney for Carson-Slaughter, said Monday that she was now in college and hoped to find a new job. "She's already turned her life around," he said.

Prosecutors said Qattoum paid $1,500 to get the gun back in October 2004 and that Carson-Slaughter kept $300 and passed the rest to Matthews.
