Glendale on Friday named Steven Conrad, a Kentucky lawman, as its next police chief, ending a months-long, nationwide search.

Conrad, an assistant chief for the Louisville Metro Police Department, will take over the Valley's third largest city's police department. He brings with him more than 20 years of law enforcement experience. Conrad is expected to start his new job Dec. 28.

Glendale City Manager Ed Beasley picked Conrad from a list of five semifinalists, then ordered a background search be done. Conrad flew into Glendale Thursday for one last set of interviews and was offered the job Friday. advertisement

"We're very pleased," Beasley said. "I think he'll be a great fit for the department."

Conrad joined the Louisville Police Department in 1980 as a patrol officer and worked his way through the ranks, including stints as a detective, lieutenant and district commander. He was named an Assistant Chief in 1997 and led the merger his department with a county department.

He will now lead the Glendale department in forming public safety plans a series of national sporting events, including the 2008 Super Bowl. Conrad will also have a say the development of a new emergency-operations center and the West Valley Regional Public Safety Training Facility.

"I look forward to joining a dept that has a rich tradition of serving the community," Conrad said through Glendale. "And I'm honored to play a role in it's future."

Glendale had been searching for a police chief since Andrew Kirkland resigned in early April after only six months on the job, his tenure rocked by accusations of sexual harassment, creation of a hostile work environment and an "inappropriate" relationship with a female police officer.

An internal investigation found no evidence to substantiate any of those claims. But investigators concluded that Kirkland's "behavior on duty was unbecoming" and had raised "too many questions about his integrity, truthfulness, honesty and fairness." It added that "the allegations were further tied to inappropriate use of city resources and equipment."
