People in Ontario who want to file a complaint against police will no longer have to go to the local chief to ask for an investigation.

The Ontario legislature gave final approval Tuesday to a law that creates an independent civilian body to oversee complaints against municipal and provincial police.

Detectives' investigation agen

The Office of Police Integrity (OPI) has expressed concern about four serving detectives who have set up an investigation agency.

It will raise its concerns about a serious conflict of interest with Victoria Police.

That is despite police command giving the officers from the Computer Crime Squad approval to work outside the force.

Assistant Commissioner Simon Overland has told ABC TV's Stateline program that sometimes there has to be a compromise when it comes to officers taking second jobs.

"They are highly marketable - they could walk out and command considerably higher salaries than we can afford to pay them," he said.

"We would lose that expertise, we would lose all the training that we've invested in them and I think there are good reasons why we want to retain that expertise within Victoria Police."
