Bali's police chief has angrily denied Australian media reports that he was offered $US20,000 ($A27,225) to influence the outcome of model Michelle Leslie's ecstasy drug case.

The judge who presided over her trial and the prosecutors also insisted her case was dealt with fairly.

Cop held on corruption charges

Ahmedabad, November 21: Deputy Director of Police Training Academy, Karai in Gandhinagar, Manoj Patel, was on Monday arrested by State CID (Crime) on corruption and extortion charges. He was later released.

Superintendent of Police CID (Crime), Gandhinagar, Anil Pratham said that Patel was facing charges of corruption and extortion in a complaint lodged by Shoaib Mohammad, of Juhapura
‘‘The inquiry was given to CID (Crime) and we found substance in the charges, so had filed an FIR a few months back. We had sent summons to Patel and when he came today, we arrested him at Ahmedabad. But we released him as he was having an anticipatory bail,’’ he added.

Patel had allegedly made an extortion demand from Mohammad in April to clear him in an alleged arms case. At that time, Patel was Deputy Superintendent of Police, Anti Terrorist Squad (ATS).

With Patel, there were two other accused also. While one of them was ATS sub-inspector Farooq Qureshi, the other was politician Kamlesh Tripathi from Sarkhej.

Qureshi had been arrested but now he is out on bail. While the matter is pending in the court, the CID (Crime) has sought his remand in the case.

Pratham said, ‘‘Patel came along with some media persons and alleged that he had been falsely fixed in the case by CID (Crime). If he goes out to the media and makes such allegations, I would call it an act of misconduct. He should report it to proper authorities instead of going to the Press.’’
