HARARE – Police in Zimbabwe deliberately tried to embarrass former finance minister Christopher Kuruneri when he was arrested on corruption charges in 2004, a court in Harare has heard.

Menezes case 'will affect poli

Met Police Commissioner Sir Ian Blair believes the prosecution of his force over the Menezes shooting may have "serious implications" for policing.
Sir Ian told the Metropolitan Police Authority (MPA) the prosecution under health and safety laws could affect "everyday policing".

Richard Barnes, of the MPA, said he opposed also opposed the prosecution.

Jean Charles de Menezes was shot dead at a Tube station after being mistaken for a suspected suicide bomber.

Mr Brown told the BBC: "The shooting was over a year ago now. The IPCC [Independent Police Complaints Commission] has done its painful investigation.

"All we know from it is the leaks that have actually been printed in the papers.

"And if there is a health and safety prosecution, then that report will be some two, two and a half years away before it becomes public knowledge, and I find that unacceptable."

Meanwhile, Sir Ian told a meeting of the MPA the prosecution over the shooting of Brazilian Mr Menezes went "right to the heart of the policing mission", as well as "the policing mandate" and "the nature of risk taking".

He said he was not convinced that such far-reaching implications were the intention of those who had drawn up the Health and Safety at Work Act 1974, under which the Met was being prosecuted.

The Metropolitan Police Authority has agreed to write to the Attorney General, questioning the decision to bring the health and safety case against the force.
