Somerville cop charged with se

A Somerville police officer was charged yesterday with sexual abuse and assault and battery on a 2-year-old girl he was babysitting in his Melrose home.

Charges were brought against Keith Winfield, 31, a six-year veteran of the Somerville police force, after a nine-month investigation by Melrose police and the Middlesex District Attorney’s Office Child Abuse Prosecution Division.

Winfield, who grew up in Somerville, pleaded not guilty to two counts of rape of a child, indecent assault and battery on a child under 14 and assault and battery with a dangerous weapon causing serious bodily injury. Released on personal recognizance, Winfield is due back in court for a pretrial hearing Sept. 1.

According to city spokesman Tom Champion, Winfield was put on unpaid leave in March and agreed to resign from the police yesterday after the indictment was read.

“Scum,” Winfield’s attorney, Patrick Murphy, called a crew of reporters awaiting comment. “Are you here to ruin somebody’s life?”

According to the Middlesex DA, on Oct. 13, 2005, the defendant is alleged to have sexually assaulted a then 23-month-old girl while she was in his care.

Investigators allege Winfield assaulted the child with a hot object, which caused serious burns. The child’s mother brought her to a local doctor for treatment the following day, and the doctor referred her to a Hub hospital.

Upon examining the child, doctors suspected she had been sexually and physically abused, and police were contacted, according to the district attorney.
