Two Dallas police officers put
Dallas police are investigating whether two off-duty officers were involved in an assault early Thursday against popular country music singer Steve Holy.

"It appears that two unidentified Dallas police officers met the complainant at an off-duty social event and later went to the residence of the complainant," police spokesman Lt. Vernon Hale said in a prepared statement. "At some point, witnesses state that one of the men assaulted one of the hosts" at the home.

Lt. Hale offered little further information about the incident, but a 911 call record shows officers were dispat... Read more

Whitmore negotiated deal for g

WINNIPEG -- Serial pedophile Peter Whitmore would immediately plead guilty to kidnapping and sexually assaulting two young boys -- sparing them from testifying -- if justice officials honour a signed deal that led to Whitmore's surrender following a standoff earlier this week, says his lawyer.

Daniel Brodsky said his client agreed to give himself up and free a 14-year-old boy who was with him in an abandoned farmhouse in Saskatchewan in exchange for the Crown not seeking a life sentence and a dangerous offender designation.

"This whole fiasco could be resolved in two weeks," Brodsky said yesterday from Toronto.

But Saskatchewan Justice Minister Frank Quennell said he wasn't part of the deal and police can't bind justice officials to how they will handle a prosecution.

Whitmore is charged with abduction and sexual assault causing bodily harm to a 14-year-old Winnipeg boy and a 10-year-old Saskatchewan boy and forcible confinement of the 10-year-old.

Brodsky said he has a copy of the RCMP letter, which he says was written and signed by Insp. Len Del Pino and Saskatchewan prosecutor Jeff Kalmakoff.

"I will recommend to Sask. Justice that the Crown prosecutor will not seek a dangerous offender designation for Mr. Whitmore, nor a life sentence," Del Pino is alleged to have written.

In the letter, the officer also said he spoke with Kalmakoff.

Brodsky said because the prosecutor's signature is on the document, the agreement should be binding on justice officials.

Otherwise, there will be a long, drawn-out legal process, likely years, Brodsky said.

"This is about much more than Peter Whitmore. It's about the integrity of the police," Brodsky said.

"Police can't do their jobs if the message that comes out of Mr. Whitmore's case is that when you speak to a police officer, all you're speaking to is liars and cheats."

In exchange, Whitmore agreed to plead guilty to crimes involving the two boys and requested he be given a single cell in prison away from other inmates, as pedophiles are often subjected to abuse and violence behind bars. Del Pino wrote that he wouldn't oppose that request.

Police in Newfoundland-Labrador are also investigating a new complaint of sexual assault by Whitmore against a young boy from the town of Topsail.

Whitmore spent a week in Newfoundland in late June. Police were called this week after people saw his picture on television.
