Work Closer To Counter Changin

KUALA LUMPUR, Aug 30 (Bernama) -- Closer collaboration is required among Islamic countries in order to exchange information relating to the changing nature of corrupt practices occurring globally, Saudi Arabia Control and Investigation Board Deputy President Dr Saad Al-Kulaib said.

He said the collaboration would enable them to continuously update their anti-corruption strategies or developing new methods to counter new types of corruption.

Delivering the post-workshop recommendation on the final day of the 1st Organisation of the Islamic Conference (OIC) Anti-Corruption and Enhancing Integrity Forum 2006 here today, he said each member countries could also share their experiences and expertise through this collaboration.

He said the awareness among the people on anti-corruption drive and the need for capacity-building in each country could also improve through good collaboration, besides facilitating the process of investigation and judiciary of corruption cases.

"Each of our member countries will have greater understanding of the laws of each other through this collaboration and would also bring clarity and transparency that will facilitate the task to fight corruption.

Meanwhile, Turkey National Police Anti-Smuggling and Organised Crime Head Ahmet Pek said OIC needed to adopt a plan of action as basic guidelines for the member countries to put their own plans in place at their respective nations.

"The OIC plan of action will carry the main theme on anti-corruption but the member countries can still have their own plans as each have different culture, different levels of corruption and enhancing integrity," he said.

He said the mutually-agreed basic action plan was essential now as corrupters and other types of criminals "would not stop at borders" to commit crimes.

Bangladesh Anti-Corruption Commissioner Prof Dr Muhammad Maniruzzaman Miah, on the other hand, recommended consultations among the member countries to formulate a uniform agreement relating to their respective extradition laws.

He also suggested for dialogues to be held with international bodies such as the United Nations Development Programme (UNDP), Transparency International or Organisation for Economic Co-operation and Development (OECD) to discuss the best management of financial aid for post-natural disaster rehabilitation or reconstruction projects.
