Officer faces slur charges

Oak Park Police Officer Christian Priesmeyer was suspended without pay Thursday on charges that he uttered a racial slur in the lobby area of the police department.

The Fire and Police Commission, finding probable cause in the complaint, Thursday suspended Priesmeyer pending the outcome of a disciplinary hearing scheduled for 9 a.m. Dec. 3 at Village Hall, 123 Madison St. Chief Rick Tanksley has asked the commission to suspend Priesmeyer for 30 days and issue a fine, according to a complaint filed by the chief.

Priesmeyer, a 16-year veteran of the force, is accused of referring to a former village employee in a derogatory way during a Sept. 8 conversation he had with another officer while on duty.

According to the complaint, the slur came as Priesmeyer relayed an incident in which the former employee had called him a "blue-eyed devil." Priesmeyer referred to the ex-employee as "white-hating," according the complaint, and used the slur.

Priesmeyer is white and the former employee is black.

Priesmeyer's alleged comment was made in the presence of a police commander and sergeant, according to the complaint.

"His conduct was detrimental to the order, discipline and efficiency of the police department," Tanksley wrote.

Priesmeyer faces four charges: that he violated department policy and the Law Enforcement Code of Ethics; that he impugned his own integrity as well as that of the department; that he violated department regulations; and that he failed to fully support department goals.

"The foregoing conduct of Priesmeyer constitutes a substantial shortcoming in Priesmeyer's performance activities which is detrimental to the order, discipline and efficiency of the OPPD," the complaint states.

Village spokesman David Powers and Tanksley declined to comment on the charges, saying only that the police union contract prevents them from making statements about a pending case.

Attempts to reach Priesmeyer or his union representative for comment Friday and Monday, through the Fraternal Order of Police, were not successful.
