Showdown looms as Mexican riot
Thousands of federal riot police backed by armoured trucks and helicopters pushed into the Mexican city of Oaxaca yesterday as a protest that began over teachers' pay spiralled into a major confrontation.
Police wearing body armour and carrying riot shields and submachine guns were accompanied by water cannon and helicopters as they moved from the outskirts of the city towards the central plaza that has been occupied by a leftwing movement for months.

Hundreds of protesters shouted their fury as the wall of police advanced, sometimes managing to push it back a few inches. House... Read more

Alleged drug deal ends in fata

One man died after an alleged undercover drug deal with police led to a chase Monday.

The victim was identified Monday night as Ray Ware, 28, of the 1900 block of West Chestnut Street. He was pronounced dead at University Hospital at 3:29 p.m., said Deputy Coroner Jim Wesley. An autopsy will be performed Tuesday morning to determine the cause of death, Wesley said.

The incident began about 2 p.m. near West Manslick and Mount Holly roads when undercover Metro Narcotics officers were attempting to make a drug buy from three people in a white Chevrolet Suburban, said Officer Dwight Mitchell, a Louisville Metro Police spokesman.

Metro Narcotics includes officers from metro police and other agencies, including Kentucky State Police, Mitchell said.

Besides Ware there were another man and a woman in the Suburban, Mitchell said.

At some point during the transaction, the driver of the Suburban backed up, striking a civilian car and turning to go east on Fairdale Road, Mitchell said.

Two or three unmarked police cars, carrying seven undercover officers, followed the Suburban, attempting to stop it, Mitchell said.

After the Suburban crossed National Turnpike onto South Park Road, the vehicle went out of control and flipped several times in the 2200 block of South Park Road.

Two of the occupants were ejected, Mitchell said.

All three occupants were taken to University Hospital, Mitchell said. The other man and woman did not appear to have life threatening injuries.

The metro police department’s public integrity unit and traffic division were both investigating the accident.

Public integrity investigates incidents involving officers in which there is a possibility of criminal charges.

Mitchell said it is too early in the investigation to know how high speeds got during the chase.

None of the officers will be on administrative leave, Mitchell said.

No charges had been filed against anyone in the Suburban.
