Over 500 corrupt cops suspende

The SA Police Services (SAPS) suspended 529 of its members for alleged involvement in crime in 2005/2006.

Of these, 473 were suspended without salary and 56 with salary, the police revealed in its annual report released on Wednesday.

A SAPS corruption and fraud prevention plan was implemented in the 2004/2005 financial year.

A number of areas needing development were identified in the past financial year.

These included: "The establishment of an anti-corruption organisational culture in the SAPS, linking anti-corruption initiatives to risk management and developing and implementing effective detection mechanisms such as whistle-blowing and focused internal auditing," the report stated.

The strategy focused on improving the prevention, detection and investigation of corruption and fraud and limiting the impact of corruption and fraud on the police.

The police said 17 officials were suspended for aiding an escapee, 13 for armed robbery, three for attempted robbery and two for attempted theft of a motor vehicle.

There were three suspended for bribery, 233 for corruption, 62 for defeating the ends of justice and 17 for extortion. Another 55 suspensions were made for fraud, four for intimidation, eight for robbery and 112 for theft
