Stubborn police ‘do not give g

STUBBORN senior officers who refuse to implement new management practices cause major headaches for Victoria Police, a new report from the corruption watchdog says.

Some police station managers were shirking their responsibility to supervise junior officers, Office of Police Integrity director George Brouwer said in his annual report, tabled yesterday in State Parliament.

“Many of the issues at some stations arise from a failure by station management to adopt contemporary leadership and management practices and to keep pace with changes that have occurred in management of the force,” he said.

Mr Brouwer said some station managers were frustrated with new organisational and accountability requirements.

“My delegate observed that this frustration has contributed to some station management opting out of their management and supervisory role,” he said.

Mr Brouwer said lax supervision led to festering corruption.

The office had completed 61 investigations and was looking into a further 56 matters, as of June 30.

Police Association secretary Senior Sergeant Paul Mullett criticised the office for rejecting the association’s request for an investigation into police resourcing.

He said senior police had to work provisional van shifts and at reception desks.
