Russellville officer faces ext

Russellville Police Chief Chris Hargett has been on the job for just more than a year.

But perhaps one of his biggest tasks since his hire in 2005, firing one of his own officers.

"I didn't come in here to be Mr. Billy Bad and get rid of people right and left. I wanted to make the department better", said Hargett Wednesday from his office in downtown Russellville.

Still pending trial, the case of former police officer Wes Mattox who was fired by Hargett.

Hargett tells WAFF 48 News that he received a call one night that was suspicious and very disturbing.

"The person told me that they were related to an inmate in our jail and that they were being extorted for money in exchange for making a criminal drug case disappear. At that point I had no idea what the truth was but I agreed to a meeting and things just developed from there", added Hargett.

The Chief says he later determined that Mattox promised to help the inmate in exchange for a one-time $100 payment.

A portion of the money was allegedly recovered and the officer was fired.

Following an investigation, Mattox was charged criminally with several felonies including soliciting a bribe, extortion, ethics violation and using one's job for personal gain.

Sources say Mattox and his attorney are seeking a possible deal that would include changing the charges to misdemeanors.
