Ex-officer charged in taped be
A former New Orleans police officer charged in the videotaped beating of a man after Hurricane Katrina apparently shot himself to death about a month before his trial, authorities said Monday.
The body of Lance Schilling, 30, was found Sunday in a suburban Metairie home. An autopsy showed he died of a gunshot wound to the roof of the mouth, Jefferson Parish coroner's office said.

Schilling and another former officer were accused of beating Robert Davis, 64, a retired school teacher who had returned to New Orleans to check on his property several weeks after the storm.

Over '1100 complaints' against

MORE than 1100 complaints against New South Wales police were received by the force's corruption watchdog last financial year.

The Police Integrity Commission (PIC) annual report tabled in NSW parliament today shows 666 of those complaints were in the most serious category.

This includes allegations of perverting the course of justice, accepting bribes, interfering with investigations and drug offences.

The PIC was established following a recommendation of the Wood Royal Commission and, with the NSW ombudsman, is one of two bodies overseeing the force.

The 1141 complaints represented a 15 per cent increase on the previous financial year, and a 37 per cent jump on the number received in 2003-04.

Seventeen of the assessed complaints were the subject of a PIC investigation, while 574 were referred to the NSW ombudsman.

The commission oversaw a police review of a further nine complaints, the report showed.

In the 12 months to June 30, there were 51 open PIC investigations, of which 21 were major projects involving special powers and surveillance.

This included an ongoing investigation into allegations former Detective Sergeant Brad Hosemans was involved in the suspected murder of Bathurst woman Janine Vaughan in 2001.

The report also showed that 51 warrants were issued granting the PIC permission to tap a phone. This was down from 59 warrants issued the year before.

Other PIC investigations resulted in briefs of evidence being prepared for 22 people, with a possible 103 charges referred to the Director of Public Prosecutions.
