Charge for police union boss

POLICE union boss Gary Wilkinson has been charged with contempt after labelling Queensland's Deputy Coroner's findings into a death in custody a "witch-hunt".

Deputy Coroner Christine Clements handed down her report into the death of Palm Island man Mulrunji Doomadgee on September 27, finding police officer Sen-Sgt Chris Hurley was responsible for his fatal injuries.
At a press conference, Mr Wilkinson launched a scathing attack on the findings.

He also claimed the inquest pandered to Palm Island's residents and ignored "mountains of evidence" and that Sen-Sgt Hurley was "hung out to dry".

Two weeks later Mr Wilkinson apologised for the comments.

"I wish to emphasise that I did not mean to question the impartiality or personal integrity of the Acting Coroner or indeed to reflect upon the Magistrate's Court itself," he said.

Mr Wilkinson will appear in the Brisbane Supreme Court on November 27.

Mr Wilkinson and his union spokesman did not return calls from The Courier-Mail yesterday.
