New Unit Cracks Down on Police
Milwaukee County District Attorney, John Chisholm, created the Public Integrity Unit after being elected last year. The unit is made up of four prosecutors whose jobs are to weed out bad police officers and public officials. One prosecutor is dedicated solely to police misconduct. Chisholm says the ultimate goal is to act as a deterrent.

Chisholm: Our goal is not to prosecute bad cops it’s to prevent those from happening in the first place by knowing that there will be a certain consequence for doing it.

Since the unit got its start, it’s reviewed 49 police misconduct cases... Read more

Money stolen from Rogers Polic

ROGERS — The Arkansas State Police launched an investigation Wednesday into a case of theft at the Rogers Police Department.

Rogers police initiated their own investigation Tuesday when it was discovered money was missing from a bank bag containing checks and cash representing fines and forfeitures collected this week.

While Rogers Mayor Steve Womack declined to say how much money was stolen, he described it as a "sizable amount."

According to a written statement from the city, Rogers officials consulted with city attorney Ben Lipscomb and Benton County Prosecutor Robin Green late Tuesday prior to asking the State Police to conduct the investigation. "Obviously, we are extremely disappointed with the disappearance and will employ all necessary investigative assets to bring a quick resolution to the crime," Womack said. "It is very important (that) an outside agency take the lead in this investigation."

While no indication of a suspect was given by the city, Police Chief Steve Helms doesn’t believe a police officer was the culprit. "Any time you have a breach of this type in the department, it casts a bad reflection on all of us," Helms said. "I am confident the missing money does not involve any of our sworn personnel and remain confident in the character and integrity of the department as a whole."

While Womack concurs with Helms, the mayor said the money bag was found in a secure area, leading him to think that the theft was an inside job perpetrated by a city employee.

Helms mirrored Womack’s statement regarding the hope for a speedy investigation. "It is an unfortunate situation and we’ll get to the bottom of it very soon," the police chief said.

Meanwhile, Womack said the Police Department planned to "tweak" the system it uses to keep track of money it collects.
