Police union bully probe under
THE Ombudsman has savaged WorkSafe for failing to properly investigate bullying allegations against Police Association secretary Paul Mullett.

George Brouwer yesterday found that WorkSafe's handling of the complaint against Sen-Sgt Mullett was inadequate and ignored much evidence of his bullying.
Sen-Sgt Mullett rejected the Ombudsman's finding, saying claims he was a bully were being spread by "rabid dissidents" who had tried and failed to take over the Police Association.

However, WorkSafe and Victoria Police have agreed to reopen their probes into claims by two ... Read more

Police corruption gag 'absurd'

ANOTHER police bid to block evidence in the Dianne Brimble case - by aksing for a witness's evidence to be kept off the record - has been branded "absurd".

South Australian law officials earlier today expressed concern that the inquest into the death of Dianne Brimble may be used to "spread baseless allegations of police corruption".

In a letter tendered to the hearing at Glebe Coroner's Court today, the South Australian Crown Solicitor's Office says the matter - which hinges around a forthcoming witness' testimony about drug-dealing in Adelaide - is not relevant and should not be dealt with at the ongoing inquest.

The fresh witness, codenamed Mr White, is expected to tell the court tomorrow that at least one of the men now implicated in the mother-of-three's death on a P&O cruise has "the protection" of Adelaide police and an outlawed bikie gang.

Lawyers for one of the eight persons of interest in the case, Petar Pantic, have also threatened to seek a Supreme Court injunction to silence Mr White.

This is the second time a police force has tried to intervene over the evidence being given to the inquest.

Counsel assisting the coroner, Ron Hoenig, said the commissioner's demands for details of Mr White's statement to the court were "patently absurd" and a "political response".

"It is of absolutely no concern for the South Australian police and South Australian Government who took statements from the witness and what might be in the notes," Mr Hoenig told the inquest.

The 42-year-old Mrs Brimble died on the floor of a cabin aboard the P&O cruise ship Pacific Sky on September 24, 2002 after ingesting a toxic mix of alcohol and the drug fantasy.

Both the NSW and the SA police have opposed the airing of certain information, saying it is not within the jurisdiction of Deputy State Coroner Jacqueline Milledge.

The SA letter also sought an assurance from the court that counsel assisting the inquest, Ron Hoenig, would not question Mr White about the alleged police corruption.

However the issue is understood to be of great relevance to the inquest.

Mr Hoenig said to Ms Milledge: "I take exception to the suggestion that Your Honour has no jursidiction to deal with certain matters."

Ms Milledge rebuffed much of the letter's contents, saying if SA authorities wished to contest what evidence was aired at the inquest they could do so in court.

"I'm nobody's pen pal," she said.

The hearing continues.
