BRADENTON, Fla., Jan. 18 (UPI) -- A Bradenton, Fla., police officer has gotten praise and may be punished for towing a homeless woman's shopping cart with his cruiser.

Homeless advocates in Manatee, Fla., have praised officer Nicholas Evans for towing the woman's possession-filled shopping cart 12 miles to the county jail, the Bradenton Herald reported.

But Police Chief Michael Radzilowski called what Evans did dangerous, adding homeless advocates are misguided.

Evans took Marie L. Brooks, 42, to jail on a contempt-of-court charge Jan. 9.

Brooks had all of her possessions in a shopping cart and Evans decided to transport it by holding the handle of the cart outside of his driver's side window, Radzilowski said.

Evans did the same thing with an empty shopping cart during his next shift, against the orders of his superiors.
