Miami Chief Buys Controversial
Miami Police Chief John Timoney confirmed he purchased a Lexus SUV, which the City of Miami ordered him to return, after CBS4 revealed he was driving as a loaner he had not paid for.

Panel suspends cop in slur

Oak Park Police Officer Christian Priesmeyer pleaded guilty Saturday to charges that he uttered a racial slur in the department's lobby and was issued a 30-day suspension without pay.

Priesmeyer, a 16-year veteran of the force, admitted to referring to a former village employee in a derogatory way during a Sept. 8 conversation he had with another officer. The comment was made in the presence of a police commander and sergeant.

Fire and Police Commission Chairman Ida Roldan Monday said her closing statements to Priesmeyer Saturday were a warning to other officers as well.

"On behalf of Fire and Police Commission we want to make it clear that we consider these charges very serious," she said. "We don't condone this behavior. It is a poor reflection on the police department, the village and all the citizens of Oak Park. Any future violations, by Priesmeyer or others, will be dealt with severely."

According to the complaint filed by Oak Park Police Chief Rick Tanksley, the slur came as Priesmeyer relayed an incident in which the former employee called him a "blue-eyed devil." Priesmeyer referred to the ex-employee as "white-hating," according to the complaint, and used a racial slur.

Priesmeyer is white and the former employee is black.

Priesmeyer pleaded on four charges, that he violated department policy and the Law Enforcement Code of Ethics; impugned his own integrity as well as that of the department; violated department regulations; and failed to fully support department goals.

Tanksley said he is satisfied with the commission's ruling.

"The chairman gave a very stern warning to Officer Priesmeyer and the entire membership that this behavior won't be tolerated," Tanksley said. "It's taken very seriously. We live in a diverse community and have a diverse workforce. We can't have officers referring to any members of the department or community in a derogatory way."

While Priesmeyer escaped paying a fine, he is required to attend a series of diversity training classes. His unpaid suspension began Nov. 19.

Tanksley said every officer in the department attends diversity training classes each year.

"We've come a long way, and to have an officer use such language is unfortunate," he said. "I don't feel Priesmeyer's comment is endemic of our feelings in the department as a whole. The officer made a mistake. He realizes he made a mistake. He admitted it and that goes a long way."
