Police face probe into G20 res

An inquiry has been launched into police conduct during the violent G20 protests that rocked Melbourne in November.

Victoria's Office of Police Integrity (OPI) has been called in to investigate complaints of improper use of batons against protesters, News Limited newspapers say.

But the threat of discipline against officers has angered police union leaders, who claim protesters pelted their members with bottles and balloons filled with urine.

"Our members were treated appallingly," Police Association secretary Paul Mullett told the Herald Sun. "It was our members who were violated and abused.

"They (the protesters) were there for one purpose - to cause disruption."

Victoria Police set up a taskforce after the forum of the Group of 20 nations and so far have charged 29 people with various offences, including riot and affray, the newspaper says.

Four police officers and two protesters were hospitalised in the mayhem in which water-filled barriers were allegedly used as weapons against police.

A Victoria Police statement said it took the allegations against its members seriously and all complaints would be thoroughly investigated by its ethical standards department, overseen by the OPI.
