The fraud detective had just caught a man involved in the infamous Nigerian email scams.

The case attracted worldwide media attention, intrigued the public, and must have been a big coup for the assets confiscation unit, in which Kostakidis worked.

It was October 2003, and Nick Marinellis, the Australian link in the email scam, had been charged with fraud. He had ripped off people who believed they would be paid for allowing the Africa... Read more

2 police officers held while t

Two police officers were caught red-handed while allegedly taking bribes from a businessman in the capital and an expatriate in Sylhet yesterday.

Fashiur Rahman, Sub-Inspector and also the officer-in-charge of Sadarghat Police Outpost, was sent into the custody of his colleagues at Sutrapur Police Station.

Yunus Ali, a generator businessman, had informed the joint forces in operation that the police official asked to pay him Tk 20,000, failing which he would be implicated in a case on charge of keeping unauthorized machinery.

According to their agreement, Yunus and Fashiur went to Islamia Restaurant for the payment of Tk 5,000 in the first installment at about 11:30pm.

"Members of the joint forces were waiting nearby. As soon as SI Fashiur took the money from Yunus, the law-enforcers came and caught him along with the money," says the case statement.

He was handed over to Sutrapur Police Station at about 1am. A case was filed against him under the Speedy Trial Act.

Our Sylhet Correspondent reports: A joint-force team caught red-handed an ASI of police while the officer-in-charge escaped a mousetrap laid when they were allegedly taking bribe on Tuesday night in Kanaighat thana.

Abdul Majid Bhuiyan, officer-in-charge of the police station, was closed in connection with the underhand dealings.

Rupa Miah, an expatriate, had informed the Anti-Corruption Commission that the OC, Majid Bhuiyan, demanded Tk 50,000 for dropping his name from a case filed against him on charge of realizing extortion. "We fixed Tuesday evening for giving Tk 30,000 in the first phase," he said, narrating the episode-one of many coming to light during the ongoing countrywide drives against corruption and crime.

Deputy Director of the ACC Sylhet office Nasiruddin went to the OC of Kanaighat with Rupa Miah and introduced himself as Rupa Miah's relative.

Rupa told the OC that he would pay Tk 10,000 against the installment, begging more time for the full payment. The OC sent them to ASI Syed Moudud Hossain Rumi.

While the ASI taking the money from Rupa Miah, Nasiruddin introduced himself as an ACC official and caught hold of the cop.

"Soon, Moudud Hossain drew out his pistol and aimed at Nasiruddin.

Hearing shouts of Nasiruddn, joint-force members, who already had taken position in the thana, rushed in and caught ASI Rumi," says the case statement.

Sensing trouble, OC Majid managed to run away from the police station, the sources said.

The joint forces handed him over to the police after interrogating him in the UNO office. A case was filed in this connection with Kanaighat Police Station.
