High on spirit, low on ethics

A Police Inspector from the Vikhroli Police station was caught by the State Excise Department officials along with three other people on Wednesday afternoon, for carrying illegal liquor in an official police jeep, at Charoti Naka on the Mumbai-Ahmedabad Highway.

State Excise officials found 17 boxes of Daman-made foreign liquor, valued at nearly Rs2 lakh from PI Ashok Dhavle’s jeep.

“We had a tip off that a police jeep numbered MH01 SA 135 would pass through Charoti Naka between 1 and 3 pm on Wednesday. We stopped the white-coloured Bolero jeep of the Police Department at around 1:30 pm. We asked the people in the jeep to get down so that we could frisk the jeep. Dhavle introduced himself to us and we told him that we were doing our duty,” said Excise Inspector PN Dhande.

“When we asked Dhavle why he was carrying so much liquor, he said that it was for a wedding ceremony in his family.

The other three accused Vinod More, Shankar Navkhane and Pundalik Rane are civilians and introduced themselves as Dhavle’s friends. No police driver was present in the jeep, which means that Dhavle was using the government vehicle for his personal use and doing such illegal things,” added Dhande.

The liquor found in the jeep is of various brands like Signature, Bagpiper, Mc Dowells whisky and Romanov Vodka. The total valuation of the seizure is around Rs6 to 7 lakh, including the jeep and the liquor.
