Minister denies bikie money pa

QUEENSLAND'S Police Minister and Police Commissioner have denied claims money from an outlaw motorcycle group paid for police presence at a hot rod festival on the Sunshine Coast.

Police "specials" yesterday joined on-duty officers to police the Caloundra Bike and Hot Rod Show, attended by around 100 members of the outlawed Bandidos motorcycle gang.

But, Police Minister Judy Spence and commissioner Bob Atkinson said the specials' presence was paid for by the Caloundra Aussie Rules Football Club which co-organised the event with the motorcycle gang.

The specials are off-duty officers who are paid for by event organisers to free up on-duty police for other duties and are used at events such as sporting matches.

Ms Spence said police did nothing wrong by attending. Indeed, it would have been irresponsible not to attend to ensure public safety at a significant community event.

“The police would be very concerned if the whole of the Bandidos Club is at an event, then obviously there is more risk to the public than if those bikies were not at an event,” she said.

“So, I think it is reasonable that we had more police members there to protect the members of the public.”

She said it was not illegal for community groups to associate with the Bandidos, although it was not something she would encourage.

“These kind of outlaw bikie clubs are dangerous people and we shouldn't be engaging them in legitimate events,” she said.

Mr Atkinson said the incident would be investigated but he believed nothing untoward occurred.

“My understanding is the same as the minister's, that the money came from the football club,” Mr Atkinson said.

“If the football club received money from the Bandidos then that's a matter for the football club.”

He said he did not know “for the life of me” why the football club was planning events in concert with the bikies.

And, he said, he would encourage the football club to break away from involvement with the Bandidos at next year's event.

The motorcycle club made news when they and rival bikie gang the Rebels clashed in a roadside fight north of Brisbane in February.

Last month, the Brisbane clubhouse of the Rebels was burnt down in an arson attack.

No charges have been laid.
