The case of an off-duty Des Moines police officer's traffic stop has had a ripple effect in the metro area and across Iowa as police chiefs stress to their officers that if they stop fellow officers driving nearly 100 mph with alcohol on their breath - or for any other wrongdoing - those officers should be treated like any private citizen.

Local police leaders discussed news reports about Stewart Drake, who escaped a ticket and alcohol testing last fall when he was clocked driving 99 mph, during a meeting Thursday. The chiefs came to a consensus that there are two separate issues: off... Read more

BARSTOW - Issues within the Barstow Police Department have been brought to the attention of the San Bernardino County District Attor ney's Public Integrity Unit, said lead public integrity attorney Frank Vanella.

He said someone asked his unit to look into a member of the police department. The public integrity unit handles complaints filed against people in public office.

"There's some concern about an officer in the police department, and we're having a looksee," he said.

Vanella would not comment on the details of the complaint but said his department is only conducting a preliminary investigation in order to determine whether to proceed with a full investigation.

Neither John Rader, spokesman for the city, nor Det. Andrew Espinoza Jr., Barstow Police Officer Association President, were aware of the details of the Public Integrity Unit's actions.

Rader released this statement in an e-mail: "We are not aware of the details of this referral to the Public Integrity Unit; however, the Barstow Police Department takes its integrity very seriously and will participate in the process if and when requested to do so."

Espinoza said he did not know whether the preliminary investigation is related to the recent resignation of four Barstow police officers last week.
