Nine Montgomery Officers Accus

Eight Other Officers Under Investigation

News4 has learned nine Montgomery County police officers have been accused of working as private security guards when they were supposed to be working as police officers.

The nine officers have been placed on administrative leave during the investigation, News4 reported. Eight other officers also are being investigated.

Montgomery County Executive Ike Leggett said he got word of the investigation Tuesday from police headquarters.

"We take the allegations against them very seriously. We are looking into the matter and have every confidence that the chief will get to the bottom of it," Leggett said.

The police department refused to comment about the case.

Montgomery County police spokesman Lt. Eric Burnett told News4, "It would not be fair to the officers and department to release information during an ongoing investigation."

The investigation began after a complaint from officials at Grady Management, which manages several housing complexes, that several county police officers hired by Grady might be double-dipping, according to News4's John Friess.

"I think there was some allegation made by some private entity that indicated some action he thought was inappropriate to the police department, and they have responded and taken appropriate action," Leggett said. "We are continuing the investigation."

Montgomery County Ethics Commission reports show that officers often work as private security guards when not at work. But these accusations indicate the nine officers allegedly did two jobs at once, which is clearly against department regulations.

The County Council president said the state’s attorney’s office will be given the findings and could prosecute if necessary.

"There's nothing wrong with people having a second job," said County Councilman Phil Andrews. "The problem, of course, is there's no excuse for double-dipping."
