South Africa: SIU probes staggering corruption cases
The special investigating unit (SIU) has been inundated with new cases revealing staggering corruption in the police, the public broadcaster, the land reform and housing subsidy systems, state departments and municipalities, MPs heard on Wednesday.

SIU head Willie Hofmeyr told Parliament's portfolio committee on justice: "We have received a flood of new cases. Some of them are very big."

He outlined 16 new proclamations received by the anti-graft unit in the past financial year, the most ever in its 15-year history, before commenting wryly that "few professionals in South Af... Read more

Dundee Police Chief Submits Re

DUNDEE - Police Chief Bill Guess resigned Thursday after receiving a review that he said questioned his honesty, integrity and ethics.

"I just really have been pushed past my ultimate limit," he said.

Guess said he originally submitted his resignation Monday with two weeks' notice.

After Town Manager Charles Saddler asked him to reconsider and stay until Aug. 1, Guess rewrote his letter with the Aug. 1 effective date.

The letter said he was moved to resign after a "discussion regarding comments (Saddler) obtained from the (Town) Council which are based on inaccuracies and misconceptions."

Guess wouldn't give specifics about the comments, but he described them as "very insulting."

"I don't think I can work with people that feel that way," Guess said.

Saddler said Guess was not asked to resign.

"I did not threaten him with termination at all," Saddler said. "The chief has done a lot in the time he's been here. He's done well for the Police Department and the community. The people of Dundee should be grateful for what he has done for us."

Guess said Saddler was not a factor in his resignation.

"This is not a problem between Saddler and me," Guess said. It's a problem with the council.

In a memo circulated to his staff Thursday, Guess said he was called into Saddler's office April 11, the day after the council voted to keep the Police Department and not contract with the Polk County Sheriff's Office for law enforcement services.

Guess said he was told that the issue of the merger with the Sheriff's Office was a result of the council's dislike for him.

The memo said that May 7, Saddler gave Guess a review based on comments made from council members.

"The comments about my integrity, ethics and honesty, along with false allegations have led to this decision," the chief's memo stated.

Guess hasn't made any decisions about what will happen after Aug. 1, but he has no plans to move from Dundee. He does plan to work but is not sure if he will work in law enforcement or private industry.

"I love the town and I love the people," Guess said.

Guess has been the Dundee police chief since 2000. His salary is about $55,000 a year.
