Former Hobson City police chie

Former Hobson City Police Chief Daryl Parker was sentenced Thursday to 46 months in federal prison on three counts of selling firearms to a convicted felon and extorting money to release an impounded automobile.

Parker, 54, of Lincoln, pleaded guilty to the charges in December. He served as police chief of Hobson City, an east Alabama town of about 900 people, from 1999 until his arrest in October.

"A corrupt cop cannot hide behind a badge," said U.S. Attorney Alice H. Martin in a statement. "Integrity will be restored through quick investigation and strong prosecution. I commend local law enforcement."

The statement says Parker cooperated in the investigation after confronted with the allegations and was remorseful at having broken the law.

U.S. District Court Judge Lynwood Smith said in the statement a police chief is a position of trust and that punishment should reflect the seriousness of the crime.

Smith noted Parker's cooperation and health. As a result, he will serve forty-six months for each count concurrently. He is to report to prison on June 27.
