The D.C. Police Complaints Board, an independent agency that investigates reports of police misconduct, is calling on police to improve the monitoring of complaints that officers fail to respond appropriately to hate crimes, including anti-LGBT hate crimes.

Brazilian president orders inv

Brazilian President Luiz Inacio Lula da Silva on Thursday ordered investigations into the Federal Police's role in fighting fraud in public bidding processes after the resignation of energy minister.

Minister of Institutional Affairs Walfrido Mares Guia said Congress leaders complained about police arrests in "Operation Razor" on May 17 for lacking justification in a meeting with Lula.

Members of the Brazilian Democratic Movement Party (PMDB), the president's main ally in the Congress, said the "Operation Razor" had a negative effect on the party's relationship with the federal government.

Lula ordered the Ministry of Justice, which controls the Federal Police , to carry out investigations into its performance.

On May 17, federal agents arrested 47 people allegedly involved in the fraud, including a former state governor in "Operation Razor."

The investigations led to former Minister of Mining and Energy Silas Rondeau's resignation Tuesday, who was charged with taking a bribe to favor a construction company in the public bidding process.
