Researcher requests Tupelo PD
TUPELO - An ethicist looking into city policies has requested E-911 radio logs for the police department for calendar years 2005-2006.

The request was a topic at Thursday's meeting of the E-911 Board of Commissioners, but the officials aren't sure that they can hand over the records. They cited privacy reasons and also weren't sure that have the workers to compile documents requested by Cindy Brown, executive director of Ethics Now.

Officer found to be source

A SENIOR policeman who denies tipping off a high-profile football player about a gang rape investigation has been revealed as the source of secret information leaked to the media.

Supt Adam Purcell gave confidential police information to journalists, a politician and a member of the public in numerous tapped phone conversations played at the Police Integrity Commission yesterday.

During one investigation, he is heard tipping off a Seven News journalist about a child sex assault in Sydney and directing him to lie about where he got the information.

Supt Purcell was also recorded denying the leaks to other officers, including his regional commander, Assistant Commissioner Mark Goodwin.

In previous evidence to the commission, Supt Purcell said he was trying to stop media leaks when he held a private meeting with then South Sydney captain Bryan Fletcher about a gang rape investigation.

Supt Purcell, who holds a role with the Blues State of Origin side, said Mr Fletcher was a witness and that he wanted to avoid the “media fiasco” like that which followed the Bulldogs rape inquiry.

The commission is investigating the way in which police handled the investigation into the alleged gang rape of a young tourist in Sydney on November 19, 2004.

Supt Purcell said he did not tip off the rugby league player about the investigation and denies their contact compromised the investigation.

In a secretly recorded conversation with a journalist for The Daily Telegraph, Supt Purcell is heard discussing issues likely to be contained in the report about the Cronulla riot in December 2005, before the report’s release.

Supt Purcell, who debriefed officers after the riot, can be heard telling the journalist about communication difficulties and other details about the police response to the riot and subsequent revenge attacks.
