No proof of corrupt cops: comm
Investigating officers have yet to hear from any witnesses to support claims of police corruption on the Gold Coast, Queensland Police Commissioner Bob Atkinson says.

Three serving police officers went public last month with claims that colleagues were regularly executing false search warrants, sourced from random car plate numbers, to boost their monthly quotas.

Mr Atkinson was forced to defend accusations of police inaction after it was revealed the whistleblowers had taken their claims to the state's Crime and Misconduct Commission more than 12 months ago.

Detroit: Police Commanders Cha

TWO DETROIT POLICE COMMANDERS CHARGED

Prosecutor Kym L. Worthy has issued charges against two Commanders from the Northeast District of the Detroit Police Department . Commander Todd Bettison, 30 has been charged with Operating Under the Influence of Liquor and Possession of a Firearm While Under the Influence of Liquor. Both charges are misdemeanors, which carry a penalty of 93 days in jail.

Commander John Autrey, 54 has been charged with Misconduct in Office, a felony which carries a maximum penalty of five years in prison, Tampering with Evidence, a felony which carries four years in prison, and Willful Neglect of Duty by a Public Officer, a misdemeanor which carries one year in jail.

On April 28, 2007 Commander Todd Bettison was off duty and alone driving a department issued vehicle when he crashed into a utility pole located on Hayes and Seymour in the City of Detroit. Commander Bettison was allegedly operating the car under the influence of alcohol at the time he struck the pole. He was injured in the crash and emergency medical personnel came to the scene to assist him. It is alleged that a small empty wine bottle was observed in the passenger side of the car and that three identical small wine bottles were discovered on the ground outside of his car. Commander Bettison was transported to St. John Hospital and treated for injuries related to the accident.

“No matter what your station is in life, you must be held accountable,” said Prosecutor Worthy. “I’m not sure how many more examples we need to show that drunk driving is dangerous, illegal and has devastating ramifications.”

Commander Bettision has been suspended from the Detroit Police Department with pay.

Commander Autrey went to see Commander Bettison on April 28, 2007 at St. John’s Hospital. When he left the hospital he allegedly went to the scene of the car crash and was observed taking small wine bottles and placing them in a plastic bag inside his vehicle. It is alleged that he disposed of all the small wine bottles found at the scene of the car crash.

Commander Autry has been suspended without pay by the Detroit Police Department.

“I have to ask myself if Commander Autry would have sat still if someone under his command had engaged in this type of behavior? I think not,” said Prosecutor Worthy. “The day we knowingly allow a police official to tamper with evidence is the day we have compromised the integrity of the entire criminal justice system.”

The arraignment is expected to take place on Tuesday at 12:30 p.m. at 36th District Court located at 421 Madison in Detroit.
