Examining Suspended Police Chi

LAKEWOOD, Tenn.-Earlier this week, Lakewood Police Chief Lawrence Lee was suspended from his post.

NewsChannel 5 examined his law enforcement background and found that Lee may have had a trouble past before he became police chief in Lakewood, a small city outside of downtown Nashville on Old Hickory Boulevard.

Lee has worked for Metro since 1983 in a variety of positions. But he was fired after a handful of serious accusations.

His law enforcement resume is a long one and includes stints as a warrant officer, gang intelligence officer and shift supervisor.

Lakewood city officials confirmed that Lee was suspended. He is accused of giving former Lakewood employee Erik Maasikas, a police badge and ID. Maasikas is accused of using that badge and impersonating a police officer.

"To think that someone is out there who is pretending or who used to be an officer, who's no longer sworn, it's just not a good situation," said Kristin Mumford, Metro police spokeswoman.

On Thursday, NewsChannel 5 took a closer look at Lee and his law enforcement career, which has many blemishes. For example, when he was a Davidson County Sheriff's employee, there was an internal investigation that concluded he used his "position to obtain confidential information and disclosing that information to unauthorized individuals."

The letter also indicated that Lee would leave "during work hours to handle matters pertaining to your private security business" and that he "knowingly associating with convicted felons" and used "departmental-issued equipment for your private business."

According to the department spokesperson, they fired Lee for violating five departmental rules including ethics and abuse of position.

So, did Lakewood know of Lee's past?

Lakewood City Manager Ronnie Pugh said he was hired after Lee and had no idea of any past problems. Pugh added someone with these problems would not be hired under his watch.

When Lee's lawyer was contacted Thursday, he said that as chief of police, Lee does have the authority to issue a badge and ID to reserve deputies. Although no one from the city of Lakewood spoke on camera, city officials said they hope to have some resolution to this case early next week.

Maasikas received a misdemeanor citation for criminal impersonation. He has until July 12 to surrender to Metro police.
