DART officer faces misconduct

DART officials have accused a transit police officer of official misconduct and placed her on unpaid administrative leave, DART and the officer's attorney said Thursday.

Dallas Area Rapid Transit officials said Officer Susan Craig falsely claimed that a rider she arrested Monday had kicked her in the head during an altercation on a DART train. The rider initially was charged with felony assault of an officer. The charge has since been dropped, DART officials said.

Officer Craig's attorney, Jane Bishkin, said another DART officer saw Officer Craig get kicked in the head.

Initially, DART spokesman Morgan Lyons said Officer Craig had been placed on paid leave, but he corrected that statement Friday. Internal affairs continues to investigate, and it's not clear how soon a decision about Officer Craig's employment will be made, Mr. Lyons said.

Ms. Bishkin said her client has not been charged with a criminal offense. Officer Craig's record includes a previous allegation that she used excessive force. She received a written reprimand in that case, Ms. Bishkin said.
