Top cop nabbed for bribery

A senior Durban Metro police officer is in hot water after allegedly accepting cash and a bottle of alcohol to squash traffic fines.

The police officer is expected to appear in court on charges of corruption and bribery, defeating the ends of justice and impersonating a police officer.

Members of the Independent Complaints Directorate (ICD), a specialised unit that investigates police corruption and fraud, on Thursday arrested the officer after undercover officers approached him to have their traffic fines cancelled.

The cop is one of the managers in charge of Emtateni Logistics, a company set up by the council and the private sector to reduce traffic violations in the city centre by ensuring that those who violate traffic laws pay the price.

The arrest was confirmed by municipal manager, Dr Michael Sutcliffe who commended the ICD for working hard to root out corruption in the Metro Police.

"The arrest is part of a campaign with the city and the ICD to deal with corruption because corruption needs to be wiped out.

"We want to have an administration which is corruption-free and one that operates efficiently," he said.

The Daily News managed to obtain information from a senior Metro Police manager who said he was aware that the allegedly corrupt cop was being monitored by the police watchdog.

"The undercover cops asked him to cancel their traffic fines and they went to his office yesterday with cash notes which they had photocopied. The notes were used as the evidence.

"The members of the ICD also allegedly gave him a bottle of alcohol," the source said.

Police later went to the suspect's home in Merebank, where a massive raid was carried out.

Police and ICD officials were shocked at what they found.

"We found dozens of boxes containing hundreds of traffic fines which had been removed from Metro offices."

Police said they will sift through the fines and will use the details to contact those who had not paid fines to the city.

"The arrest is going to send a clear message that we do not tolerate fraud and corruption. We really need operations like this one to ensure that this behaviour ends," the source said.

The Internal Affairs Department (IAD) established by Metro Police head, Eugene Nzama to deal with, among other things, the issue of corruption, has nabbed its fair share of corrupt cops.

It is investigating more than 120 cases for corruption, theft and fraud.

A police officer found guilty of corruption and fraud would face both criminal charges and internal suspension.
