Public urged to report corrupt

A complaints desk has been opened at the police regional headquarters in Masaka to fight corruption and abuse of authority within the Police Force. This follows numerous complaints from the public about the misconduct of police officers who have been implicated in several cases of malpractices.

In a press conference at his office recently, Regional Police Commander Andrew Sorowen said some corrupt police officers deliberately mishandle cases, ask for bribes thus supporting crime. He said such cases are not reported due to public fear.
Mr Sorowen called on the public to report such cases and offered protection to those who give his office such information.

Some of the residents complained that some CID officers mishandle serious cases like robbery, murder, rape and defilement. A 45-year-old man from Sembabule town council who declined to be named, said he was asked by CID officers to pay a bribe of Shs2 million to have his son released. His son had been arrested for allegedly stealing 10 cows in December last year. "I gave them the money but my son was not released until I reported the matter to the RDC's office,'' he said.

Some taxi operators in the districts of Masaka, Sembabule, Rakai and Lyantode also blamed some of the road accidents on traffic officers and policemen who patrol at night. They said instead of guiding road users to observe traffic rules, the policemen take bribes and let the culprits go. "These officers have become a problem. They ask for bribes from excessively loaded taxis and heavy trucks along Kampala-Masaka and Masaka- Mbarara roads and let them pass,'' one operator said.

Mr Sorowen said the investigation would be conducted mostly in the districts of Masaka, Sembabule, Rakai and Lyantonde where many cases about police misconduct were cited.
