Police captain in probe resign

One of the Gainesville Police Department's highest ranking officials resigned Friday afternoon in the midst of a Florida Department of Law Enforcement investigation into possible misconduct.

Capt. Ray Weaver, who has been with GPD since 1981, resigned effective 5 p.m. Friday, according to Lt. Keith Kameg, the spokesman for GPD.

Weaver's attorney, Gloria Fletcher, said Weaver chose to retire in order to spend more time with his family.

"I think what Capt. Weaver did is he assessed where this is and put his family ahead of everything else," Fletcher said. "Of course he's going to cooperate fully with any and all investigations, but he has made the decision he wanted to spend more time with his family."

Weaver became the subject of an investigation by FDLE late last week. Sources within GPD say the investigation stems from possible misconduct by the 26-year GPD veteran.

While Weaver was on vacation, FDLE crime scene analysts cordoned off Weaver's office on July 6, taking a hard drive and scraps of carpet as evidence in the investigation, sources said.

Kameg said the police department cannot comment on the nature of the investigation. He said Weaver joined the police department in August 1981 as a patrol officer. Weaver rose through the ranks until reaching the rank of captain in 2002.

As a captain, Weaver was commander of the Administrative and Technical Services Bureau at GPD, which includes overseeing the personnel, support services, training, professional standards, fiscal, technical and internal affairs divisions.

On Monday, Weaver was placed on paid suspension upon returning from vacation, and other captains were temporarily assigned to oversee his duties.

Capt. Rick Hanna has taken over most of Weaver's command in the Administrative and Technical Services Bureau and will remain the temporary commander now that Weaver has resigned, Kameg said.

The Internal Affairs Division, however, will be temporarily commanded by Capt. Lynne Benck.

Kameg said with GPD's rank structure, the six captains - now five - at the department are directly under Chief Norman Botsford, and Kameg said Weaver's nearly 26 years at the department made him one of the senior officers.

Weaver's salary was $92,667, Kameg reported.

"He served this community well and it is a profession he is profoundly going to miss," Weaver's attorney said regarding the resignation.
