Suspended Bound Brook police c

A suspended police chief awaiting trial for official misconduct in Somerset County is broke and asking his town to reconsider reinstating his pay to cover rising legal expenses, the mayor said today.

Bound Brook Police Chief Kenneth Henderson appealed to the borough council in a letter sent through his lawyer that was read during the council's private, executive session meeting on July 10, Mayor Frank Ryan said.

Ryan said no action was taken, outlined several concerns that made the reinstatement unlikely, and said he personally would not approve putting Henderson back on the payroll.

The 47-year-old chief, who has maintained his innocence while suspended without pay from his $91,860-a-year job, has yet to go on trial on misconduct charges filed after he was arrested on Oct. 19, 2004. Henderson at the time was accused of conspiracy to subvert state Alcoholic Beverage Control officials who were to raid a local restaurant. A 17-count indictment later added several misconduct charges.
