Nigeria: IG Tasks Policemen on

THE Inspector-General of Police, Mr. Mike Okiro yesterday warned officers and men of the force to shun corruption and violation of the rights of the citizens in police stations saying anyone caught in the act would be dismissed from the force and prosecuted.

He further ordered the total removal of road blocks across the country vowing that his anti-corruption squad would continue to monitor the operations of policemen in parts of the country with a view to fishing out those flaunting the order.

Okiro, who was in Enugu to personally take delivery of 50 Hilux pick-up vehicles and communication equipment donated to the police by the Enugu State Government, urged policemen to shun corruption and all forms of extortion in the discharge of their functions.

He stated that the delivery of the patrol vans and communication equipment had demonstrated the confidence the government and the people of the state reposed on the police and urged his officers to put them to judicious use for effective policing of the state.

"You have no excuse whatsoever not to perform. You must chase out all the criminals in Enugu State and bring them to justice. Take the anti-crime war to the den of the criminals. People of Enugu must sleep with their two eyes closed. All the highways, nooks and crannies must be effectively patrolled. I expect no less in terms of effective and water-tight security," the IGP said.

On the other hand, Okiro appealed to the people of the state to utilize the new communication facilities to give necessary information about criminals and their activities to the police, assuring of the confidentiality of the information given.

Thanking the State Government for the gesture, the Inspector General of Police asked other states and local governments in the country to follow the Enugu example stressing that the Federal Government alone cannot provide all the funding and facilities needed for effective policing of the country.

Okiro, who was highly impressed by the performance of men of the Mopol 3 Police Mobile Squad, who mounted a colourful parade at the occasion, announced an automatic promotion of 50 policemen including two officers who led the parade, to their next rank.

Earlier while presenting the vehicles, 100 walkie-talkies and ten 5.5KVA generators to the police, Governor Sullivan Chime stressed the need for the authorities to take seriously the complaints of poor emoluments and welfare of policemen insisting that "no sane State or nation can afford to toil with security of lives and property of her people."

He noted that such neglect in the past was responsible for the decision of some states to employ extra-judicial methods of policing their people, the practice, he said, Enugu would not tolerate.

"For us in Enugu State, we do not encourage such indignity and absurdity. To do need help.

The governor explained that each of the 17 local government areas in the state donated one vehicle in addition to a pledge of N250, 000 monthly for maintenance of the vehicles and other security equipment for the police, while 21 banks operating in the state have also accepted to fuel the vehicles under the new partnership for security of lives and property.
