NPA Chief Faces Growing Calls to Step Down

It is no longer news that the National Policy Agency (NPA) has been blamed for incompetence, corruption, brutal crackdowns on demonstrators and human rights violations. A series of recent incidents are further tarnishing the image of the police whose job is to keep law and order. NPA Commissioner General Eo Cheong-soo is faced with mounting calls to resign over inappropriate activities and lack of leadership.

First, the police are being slammed for belatedly requesting an overseas travel ban on a former presidential official who was ... Read more

State AG asked to investigate police brutality case; Man nears 3 weeks on hunger strike to encourage probe of Chico incident

The California State Attorney General's office will be asked Friday - in a hand-delivered letter from Chico residents - to investigate alleged police brutality and false testimony under oath in Butte County in a case that has led to a hunger strike that has lasted nearly three weeks.

Members of the Chico Peace and Justice Center Board of Directors will hand-deliver a letter to the AG's office requesting an investigation, and hold a NEWS CONFERENCE FRIDAY at 9 a.m. at the entrance to the AG Office at 1300 I Street. DVDs of the victim of the police beating will be available for news outlets.

According to the group, Fidel Molina has been on a hunger strike in downtown Chico since July 17, and says he will not eat until he receives a written commitment from the Attorney General's Office to investigate the case.

The incident, which took place in July of 2000 at a local casino, was captured on surveillance video. It clearly shows Molina's stepson, Andy Fulton, being severely beaten by Butte County Sheriff deputies while Fulton was handcuffed on the ground

However, despite the video evidence and other documentation indicating state officials have lied about the incident, Molina has been unsuccessful in seeking justice for the past seven years. He has contacted the Butte County Sheriff's Office, Congressman Wally Herger's office, Northern and Western Regions of the NAACP, and even sent letters to President George W. Bush.

"We are concerned that Fidel Molina may lose his life in his quest for justice. If it takes something as simple as a government agency looking into these allegations of police misconduct, it is a reasonable request. Therefore, we are requesting that investigation," said Laurel Blankinship, president of the Board of Directors of the Peace and Justice Center

"The burden to explain police actions, as captured on the videotape, lies with the sheriff's department. As these actions have not been explained, it is up to the people of the state of California to request from the Attorney General's office an investigation into the apparent misconduct," added Board member Cathy Webster. The Chico Peace and Justice Center (Chico-peace@sbcglobal.net) is a 25 year-old community supported organization working to manifest alternatives to violence in our community and world.
