Ghana: IGP And His Erring Poli

THIS PAPER is so glad that the Inspector General of Police, Mr. Patrick Acheampong has resurrected from his slumber and has now decided to descend on some of his men who have and continue to soil the image of the Police Service.

For if the IGP has now taken upon himself the mantle to lead the crusade in the Police Service, whose credibility is now at stake, The Chronicle prays that the stand of the IGP remains.

The Inspector General of Police is reported to have said that punitive action would be taken against personnel of the Police Service who are found to have applied excessive force against suspects.

He was reported to have said that those erring officers in the Police Service could face criminal prosecution and civil law suits as well as liability for administrative disciplinary action, which could lead to their dismissal from the Service.

Yes, this is the spirit all Ghanaians were waiting for and this paper congratulates the IGP for becoming the person we were all expecting him to become to discipline his subordinates who joined the Police Service for their own parochial interests.

But can the IGP boldly affirm to his edict that he will do what he has been reported to have said since some of his men and women in the Police Service think that with the uniforms they wear they have the right to do anything contrary to the codes and ethics which bind them?

For how could a Police Officer become a debt collector? Is that also a part and parcel of the Police code of operations? Here, this paper applauds the Winneba Divisional Commander of the Service, ASP Jordan Quaye for his admonition to his fellow colleagues on this debt collection issue.

Mr. IGP, you have thrown the challenge and we will be watching you very critically to bring to the fore any erring Policeman who would be shielded for any wrong act.

The trust of the public for the Police in terms of those who have committed certain alleged offences but have been shielded by the Police Administration has become a source of worry and that prevents the public now to give out certain information to the Police.

And this is where the Police Administration should sit up and ask itself why the mob justice, for it is the responsibility of the Police to instill that confidence in the public to co-operate with them for justice in this country.
