Man alleges police atrocity, s

A Garments trader from Govandi on Wednesday submitted a complaint to the National Commission of Minorities alleging that two police officials from Deonar police station had falsely implicated him in a case and had threatened to sexually abuse his wife.

The trader, identified as Bijlur Rehman Mandal (30), a resident of Plot No 2, New Gautam Nagar in Govandi, alleged that the police had targeted him after he had filed a case with the Anti Corruption Bureau against the officials involved.

“Sometime in February this year, two police constables arrived at my house and took away my two-wheeler. When I asked them for a reason, they told me to speak to a police sub-inspector at Deonar police station. When I spoke to the sub-inspector, he said that my vehicle was involved in an accident, and that I would have to pay him Rs 10,000 to for the return of my bike. Following this, I filed a complaint at the Anti Corruption Office against the sub-inspector and an assistant police inspector from Deonar. However, a trap arranged by the ACB failed, since the two got wind of my complaint,” alleged Mandal.

According to Mandal, on June 9 this year, property worth over Rs 20 lakh was stolen from his home following which he lodged a complaint at Deonar police station.

“On July 30, I got a call from the police station stating that my property had been recovered. When I reached the police station, they immediately arrested me, stating that I had staged the robbery from my home to claim insurance. They forced me to sign a blank piece of paper. The two officials I had complained against threatened me with dire consequences unless I signed the paper,” alleged Mandal.

Mandal was arrested by the Deonar police on July 31, and was remanded to police custody till August 6 when he was released on bail.

“I have submitted an application to the National Commission of Minorities today, and have already sent an affidavit to Home Minister RR Patil seeking justice for myself,” said Mandal.
