Careers on the line as police
NO ONE has yet been explicitly accused, but it is clear the reputations and careers of some of the most powerful figures in Victorian policing are on the line.

The Office of Police Integrity hearing takes in two extraordinarily serious stories of alleged police corruption and abuse of public office. Santee fires police chief char

The town of Santee has fired its police chief, nearly a year after he was charged with misconduct in office and nearly eight months after he was put back on duty.

Santee Police Chief Robert Williams had been put on administrative leave after he and the town's clerk of court were arrested in October 2006 after investigators said they took town money for their own use.

Months later, Santee Mayor Silas Seabrooks returned Williams to duty as police chief, saying he hadn't been convicted of any crime. Seabrooks said last week in a written statement that Williams was fired because the South Carolina Criminal Justice Academy had suspended his certification to be an officer.

Neither Williams nor former town Clerk of Court Fredya Bruce have gone to court and no trial dates have been scheduled, said Orangeburg County prosecutor David Pascoe.

David Lee Richardson, 53, was named acting chief. Richardson was previously a patrol sergeant for the Summerton Police Department. He has 12 years of law enforcement experience.

The Santee Police Department has three full-time officers and two reserves.
