More than two weeks ago, the Police Benevolent Association sent Bloomington Police Chief Roger Aiken a letter asking for an investigation into a situation almost a month back, and requesting that Lt. Tim Stanesa be placed on administrative leave.

Here is what the letter says:

On the night of August 25, Lt. Stanesa was out drinking with fellow officers at a party, including Asst. Chief Randall McKinley, when Stanesa was called to a police standoff on Lee Street. Police labor union representative Eric Poertner says, "Apparently McKinley got notified of the situation, and in fact he was the one who authorized the use of SWAT team." We asked, "And therefore authorizing Stanesa?" Poertner say, "Yes."

The letter alleges Stanesa, who "appeared to be intoxicated," hopped into his squad car and drove to the scene. The letter says Stanesa told the commanding officer he was too inebriated to take over, but still commandeered the SWAT team. Poertner says, "And then to throw into the mix, that the guy in charge of it is potentially inebriated, that's scary."

The letter says other officers witnessed Stanesa sleeping in the mobile command center during the standoff, while he was allegedly working. Almost a month later, Poertner says he still has not received a reply to his letter - and he believes the department is dragging its feet on investigating the incident. Poertner says, "So the chief's pretty heavy handed with discpline, except for when it comes to certain people, including himself."

Chief Aiken declined our request for an on-camera interview, but told us, "It is being investigated by an independent agency." He says he has not replied to the union because "...they don't need to know, because they are not on a need-to-know basis." Aiken also told us, until the investigation is complete there is nothing to report. Aiken says, "This is a non-story until the results come back...I don't want to create a fuss over nothing."

Poertner also tells us Stanesa was previously convicted of a DUI, but lied about it on his employment application. Incidentally, Stanesa is a potential candidate for the Assistant Chief position when Jeff Sanders retires.

We tried contacting Stanesa, but were told he is out of state on a training session. WMBD will continue following this story as it develops.
