An investigation is being conducted into the theft of evidence from the vault. During a news conference Tuesday, Mister said his evidence technician assured him that no guns or drugs were kept there.

Authorities consider prosecuti

South Africa's prosecutors said Tuesday it was looking at the possibility of charging police chief Jackie Selebi, who heads up the international policing agency Interpol.

"An investigation has been conducted by the Directorate of Special Operations (DSO)" said a statement from the the National Prosecuting Authority (NPA).

The DSO, whose members are called the "Scorpions", is an elite investigative arm of the NPA, separate from the police.

But the DSO released no details of what was being investigated or what charges might be laid.

South Africa's government, its prosecuting services and other other concerned agencies have refused to comment on reports in the past week that an arrest warrant had been issued for Selebi.

Selebi faced calls to quit last year when businessman and alleged organised crime boss Glen Agliotti, was charged with the mafia-style killing of mining magnate Brett Kebble in 2005. Selebi had described Agliotti as his friend.

The Sunday Times reported that the warrant related to charges of racketeering, corruption, obstructing the ends of justice and being an accessory after the fact in Kebble's murder. It said the warrant against Selebi had been issued two weeks ago.

Ever since reports of the alleged warrant emerged, South African President Thabo Mbeki has been under fire over the suspension last week of Vusi Pikoli, the head of the national prosecuting agency.

The government has denied that Pikoli was suspended in a bid to protect Selebi.
