Allegations of abuse against Chicago Police commander
A Chicago Police commander who was found not guilty last year of misdemeanor telephone harassment is now the focus of an abuse investigation.

A spokesman for the Illinois Department of Children and Family Services confirmed Saturday that the agency is looking into allegations of child abuse involving Harrison District Cmdr. Penelope Trahanas and her teenage daughter.

“DCFS is investigating allegations of abuse in this case,” said DCFS spokesman Jimmie Whitelow. He said the agency had “no prior contacts” with the family.

Former Gastonia police officer

A former officer is suing Gastonia, its police chief and a department sergeant on claims they violated his civil rights.

Stacy Harrell, who was fired by the department in April, filed a federal lawsuit Sept. 22 alleging his rights were violated in retaliation for his refusal to engage in illegal and unethical activities.

Gastonia Police Chief Terry Sult denied the allegations and challenged Harrell to release his personnel records to the public, he said in an e-mail Wednesday.

Among the suit's claims:

• During training, Harrell was riding with another officer, who told Harrell to stop a car because of loud music. The car's driver was restrained in the back seat of the patrol car while a ticket was written. From there, officers searched the car unlawfully, the suit says. The officer said, "We have been doing it like this for 25 years," the suit says.

• Harrell and an officer investigated a two-car accident at Bojangles'. There was no damage to either vehicle and both drivers said the collision was accidental, the suit says. The officer got angry with Harrell for refusing to charge one of the drivers, the suit says.

Harrell's lawyer also said the police department would not initially allow Harrell to review his personnel records.

Sult defended his department and the six-step process used to fire employees.

"It seems these individuals have chosen to use the media for propaganda in hopes of politically influencing a favorable decision outside the courtroom, as they and their lawyers know there is little chance of success inside the courtroom," Sult said in a release.

Sult said his department was committed to defending the reputation and honor of its officers.

"The Gastonia Police Department is an organization committed to core values built on honesty and integrity necessary to promote the safety and well-being of the citizens of Gastonia," Sult said.
