Thousands of dollars in ethics

The Times analysis of Louisiana Board of Ethics statistics reveals hundreds of thousands of dollars in campaign finance disclosure fines remain unpaid.

Ethics code violators owe $879,601, despite efforts, such as using the state Attorney General’s collection department, to get the money.

The newspaper’s analysis revealed:
n Fifteen elected officials statewide currently in office who have not paid fines levied against them. They include a New Orleans judge, a police chief, mayors of four towns and several school board members.

n At least one politician, who owes was able to run for re-election despite a state law forbidding it because the board had not sought a judgement against her.

n At least 10 politicians owe more than $13,000. The largest amount by a single candidate owed is $32,000.
