FAR HILLS: Cop pleads guilty t

Suspended Far Hills police Officer James DeCoste pleaded guilty this morning before Superior Court Judge Edward Coleman to official misconduct and agreed to forfeit his position as a police officer.

DeCoste made the plea in exchange for the Somerset County Prosecutor's Office agreeing to admit him into the Somerset County pre-trial intervention program, Somerset County Prosecutor Wayne Forrest said.

DeCoste had been charged with official misconduct and theft after he was arrested in October 2005 at the Somerset Hills Visiting Nurse Association rummage sale at the Far Hills Fairgrounds. Forrest said DeCoste was found going through the tents and setting aside articles for himself at a time when he was both on duty as a police officer and the facility was closed.

DeCoste also agreed to a permanent bar from future law enforcement positions.

DeCoste's first trial in April resulted in a mistrial because of a sick juror just before the verdict was announced.
