AFGHANISTAN: Training Cops Not
In a mud-walled village on the outskirts of the provincial capital of Qalat, police checkpoint commander Abdul Rasool complains he is tired of his country's six-year war and longs for peace.

Despite Rasool's appeal, he represents what the U.S. military thinks is wrong with Afghanistan's police, a force wracked by corruption that was long neglected as the army took front and centre in securing the nation's borders and fighting the insurgency.

Standing nearby, U.S. army Capt. Dave Perry points out that trucks are being "destroyed" close to the checkpoint the Afghan comman... Read more

Officer pleads no contest to m

PORTLAND, Ore. - A Portland police officer pleaded no contest Friday morning to official misconduct charges and had to relinquish his badge.

The Multnomah County District Attorney's office said four women accused officer Matthew Kohnke of behaving inappropriately with them.

One of the women who sued Kohnke in federal court claimed he sexually harassed her during a search.

Prosecutors say in addition to the plea, Kohnke resigned from the bureau and gave up his certification to be an officer in Oregon. The no contest plea also means that Kohnke will avoid serving a jail term of up to one year in length.

In court Friday, Linda Wickerham, who claimed Kohnke searched her inappropriately, said she thought Kohnke knew what he was doing was wrong and was frightened by the experience.

She is one of four women included in the complaint filed against Kohnke.

Wickerham claims Kohnke told her to lift her shirt during a search in 2006 and also searched her pants without a female officer observing. She was a transient at the time.

Kohnke's attorney said he felt the plea cut short the career of a "very successful police officer."

Kohnke will have to pay a small fine and perform 40 hours of community service. He will also be placed on probation for two years.
