Nigeria: IG Sacks Nine Policem

The Inspector General of Police (IGP), Mike Okiro, has sacked nine police officers from the service for allegedly extorting money from motorists along the Mile two Badagry-Seme road.

The officers were arrested by a special squad, X- squad, set up by the IGP to check corrupt practices among the police officers.

Addressing police officers at the force headquarters in Abuja, Okiro said the police officers were caught with two of Federal Road Safety Corps (FRSC) marshals who connived with two civilians to keep the extorted money.

Okiro said five police officers were still at large as they took off immediately they saw the X-squad.

He said that a policeman abandoned his riffle and ran while the two FRSC marshals in the scam were handed over to their authorities for disciplinary action.

The two civilians will be charged to court along side the dismissed police officers, he added.

The IG stated that the X-squad had recovered money worth N8, 220, one AK riffle 47 and a pair of uniform, saying that the X-squad will continue to make arrests of corrupt officers.
