Ex-Indonesian police chief nam

The Indonesian Corruption Eradication Commission (KPK) announced Thursday that former national police chief Rusdiharjo was among the suspects in the scam at the Indonesian Embassy in Malaysia.

Since the case broke in 2005, at least four people have been convicted, including former ambassador to Malaysia Hadi Wayarabi Alhadar whom the court handed a 2.5-year jail sentence Wednesday along with a close aide.

Rusdiharjo is also a former ambassador to Malaysia.

"I would like to announce today that we have another suspect named Rusdiharjo," KPK head Antasari Azhar told a press conference here.

A number of embassy and consulate staff in Malaysia have been accused of unilaterally raised the fees for applicants of immigration documents in 1999-2005 in three consulates in the Malaysian cities of Penang, Johor Bahru and Kuching.

But when the consulates handed revenues to the state treasurers, they referred to an earlier regulation which set lower tariffs for immigration documents.

The practice has inflicted a loss of an estimate 41.5 billion rupiah (4.4 million U.S. dollars) to the state.

According to KPK, Rusdiharjo is believed to have received 890 million rupiah (94,489 dollars) from the illegal fee collection while being ambassador to Malaysia.
